Speaking on the experience, Cruise said “Normally in underwater sequences, people hold their breath for 10 seconds, 15 seconds max.” “So I had to prove to everyone that it was actually safe, and spend time with the safety guys and the safety officers to show them, look, not only is it safe, it’s better that I know how to hold my breath because I’m going to be very relaxed. Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has said that his administration needs more than N32. 2 billion to off-set the arrears of workers’ salaries, gratuities, pensions and subventions. At an enlarged meeting with labour leaders in the state, Ugwuanyi said that the debts were accumulated by previous administrations over the years. He said that the essence of the meeting was to intimate the labour leaders with the efforts to procure the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) bailout funds to off-set part of the debts. He said that it was important that the workers were carried along to determine the best ways to disburse the fund. “The essence of this meeting is for you to know that we have formally applied for the sum of N4.2 billion for the purpose of defraying debts owed workers in the core ministries. “We want you to interface with your colleagues in other states to recommend ways the funds will be managed when it arrives,” he said. The National Hajj Commission, has confirmed that Nigerian casualties at the September 24 Muna stampede has risen to 64. Similarly, as many as 240 Nigerian pilgrims are still missing at the time of filing this story. In a telephone interview, Mr Uba Mana, the Public Relations Officer of the Commission, said the injured were receiving prompt medical attention. According to him, a report containing the identities of the victims is on its way to Abuja, in line with the directive from the Presidency to the National Hajj Commission. He said: “As soon as our medical team finishes treating the injured, we will start airlifting them back to Nigeria.”

The list of President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial nominees failed to reach the National Assembly on Wednesday as widely expected.   The Senators, who had eagerly awaited the list, adjourned plenary to Tuesday next week. Senator Dino Melaye said on Wednesday that the list had yet to reach the Senate. Buhari, who is currently attending the 70th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, had consistently promised to unveil members of his cabinet in September, which ends today.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has revealed in its data for the month of September that there has been a fall in Nigeria’s foreign reserves. Foreign exchange reserves fell by 3.14 per cent to $30.48 billion by September 23 from $31.47 billion a month ago, central bank data showed on Wednesday. The reserves of Africa’s top oil producer is now down 23.03 per cent from a year ago. In August, the CBN indicated that foreign exchange reserves rose by $350 million to 31.43 billion. The reserves increase crossed $30 billion in July, rising by 5.6 per cent from 29.03 billion in June to $30.69 billion

The Ghana Hajj Board says it’s premature to conclude that five Ghanaian Muslim pilgrims are missing from their base in Mecca. There were reports that the Board could not confirm whether the missing Ghanaians, including a Hajj agent, were killed or injured in last Thursday’s stampede in Mina after it caused a headcount to be conducted. Over 700 pilgrims are reported to have died in the stampede with over 800 people injured. The disaster is the worst that has occurred during the pilgrimage in over 25 years. A total of 5,309 Ghanaian Muslims are in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia performing this year’s pilgrimage. In all, about two million Muslims from across the globe are performing the pilgrimage. Some 35 illegal miners have been trapped in a mine pit at Bonsawire near Asuoso in the Western Region. The incident which occurred 4:30 am on Monday morning, has brought activities at the mine site to a standstill. Sources say two persons have so far been rescued by the local folks with 33 others still trapped in the mine pit located in the forest of Bonsawire. Of the two, one is dead and the other seriously injured, our sources said. Our sources say the chances of survival of the remaining trapped illegal miners are minimal looking at the nature of the incident. About three hundred, our sources say, were working on the site at the time of the incident. The Police are yet to report to the scene.
