R&B singer Dare Art-Alade talks career, new concert and more

R&B singer Dare Art-Alade has shed some light on his personal life and career, as well as the journey so far.

He spoke to Vanguard during a recent interview saying he had a fun childhood, a period filled with so much family love.

He recalled getting into music when he was in secondary school, and losing his father at the age of 12 after which his voice broke.
He has since gained international prominence as an artiste for his unique voice and vocal texture.
He described his music saying: “Music is everything; music is emotion, expression, life, food to me. Music is everything.”
He also talked about the early days in his career when he used to cover songs and open for other established artistes during performances at shows and night clubs.
On the inspiration to write songs, the Escalade singer said he is moved by different subjects and different moods.
He said: “Different subjects, different moods and the differentpeople I work with. It really depends on the studio session and the theme and direction we want to go with in each album. I also like to put myself in people’s shoes, not necessarily always making it about myself, people and their different experiences. It needs to come from a real place, because as a creative person, you should be able to become someone else from time to time.”
He listed Jay Z, King Sunny Ade, Aretha Franklin, Fela Kuti and Beyonce as his music influences.
The singer explained that in spite of the current buzzing music industry, organic music is lacking in Nigeria.
He added the Nigerian music has been watered down to appeal to commercial purposes only, thereby losing the variety that was present in the ‘90s.
He however credits some names in Nigerian music  for their uniqueness.
He said: “A handful of people are bringing different flavours and people love them because they sound different. I’m happy that we are able to encourage and inspire the new crop of organic musicians, artists with that soulful sound like, Adekunle Gold, Asa, Bez, Praiz etc. These artists can now express their style of music because of people like me. Now they know that you can do this kind of music and still make a name and survive.”
On his music concert Love Like A Movie, he explained that he initially faced challenges as a result of lack of sponsorship and other logistics. He overcame these limitations and went on get the show started, with this year’s edition being the third of the concerts so far.
For the new edition of Love Like A Movie 3 billed to hold on Sunday, February 28, he said:
“Love like a Movie 3 is featuring Ciara. The show is magic, its dance, theatre etc. We are going futuristic this year so expect some edgy performances. It will be really fun people like Omawunmi, Olamide, Adekunle Gold, Vector etc. will be there. I’m also bringing back some Old school acts; people like Stylplus, Blackie, Weird MC, Jazzman Olofin, etc. It’s going to be fun.”
In line with the season of love, the singer shared his thoughts on the entire subject saying it is a feeling that requires putting others before yourself.
He said: “Love is God and God is love. Love is the unseen force that makes you do selfless things for the ones you love. Love is putting others before yourself.”
Recall that the 2015 edition of Love Like A Movie did not hold owing to logistic issues, especially as the general elections in Nigeria took its toll on organizers of the concert.
This year’s edition is however set to make up for the lapses of last year.
It has been titled Naked, a title in conformity with the singer’s fourth album also titled Naked.
Previous albums from the singer include From Me 2 U in 2006, unDAREYted in 2009, and Double Dare in 2010.
Dare is a critically acclaimed Nigerian musician with a specialization in R&B, jazz and Afro Pop.  He is currently signed to Soul Muzik.
